“Beaks”, or “diamond points”, are geometric elements that have been used since the Renaissance as cladding on various buildings, but over time they have been applied to decorative objects. An iconic example of this use is Vista Alegre’s glass Bicos collection. But Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro also used this element in his creations, as can be seen in the flower vases at the Visconde de Sacavém Palace, now the Ceramics Museum in Caldas da Rainha. Recently, the “beaks” served as inspiration for the Punk line. Bordallo Pinheiro’s new Bicos collection is thus inspired by these references, harmoniously dialoguing on the same table with the existing range in glass and the new tableware line produced in porcelain by Vista Alegre. By reinterpreting these textures according to its identity, Bordallo Pinheiro has given new proportions to the beaks, which mould and adapt to the surfaces of the pieces, creating textures of great visual richness. In turn, the glazes accentuate the shapes and create interplays of depth in colour and intensity.
